Not sure if this helps or not, but I thing keeping 2 column(with grouped) is better for smaller screen devices like(14 inch devices).

The new Navigation module in 10.3.x that came out of the work on the Admin UI, probably superseeded this because it allows site builders to configure admin menus.
For example by placing several menus in the vertical menu bar, visible by role. manibharathi ezhimalai ravi → made their first commit to this issue’s fork.
