Syntax error while installing drupal 7.96 on PHP 5.4

I was in the process of installing Drupal 7.96 downloaded from
https://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/drupal-7.96.zip on PHP 5.4,

However I face this syntax error while starting installation on Centos 7 PHP 5.4, MYSQL 5.5, Apache 2.2 i.e Parse error: syntax error, unexpected 'class' (T_CLASS), expecting identifier (T_STRING) or variable (T_VARIABLE) or '{' or '$' in /{{PATH}}/{{TO}}/{{DRUPAL}}/includes/file.inc on line 2752

Try to hit DRUPAL install URL i.e http://domain.com/drupal/install.php and syntax error is thrown

Please make the code compatible with PHP 5.4
