I haven't had much chance to review and merge new code, which is why the dev branch has no new patches. I don't see this as an issue but let me know, maybe I'm missing something?

It is a great idea but now that #3211915 is fixed, using view modes should allow serve reasonable sized images.
I'm having this issue too. I'd probably suggest hashing the field name in addition to shorten the prefix. I'll try to create a patch
