Vertical tabs are displayed incorrectly in Forced Colors mode

Created on 13 February 2025, about 2 months ago

Problem/Motivation

  • On admin/structure/types/manage/page or admin/config/content/formats/manage/content_format?destination=/admin/config/content/formats it is impossible to distinguish which of the horizontal tabs is the active one. Each of them has a vertical highlighted left border, and the horizontal top and bottom borders are either yellow or white, close to impossible to distinguish (a color contrast of 1.1:1 between yellow and white).
  • The content area associated with the active vertical tab is missing an outline/border, so the two are visually disconnected.

Discussed and iterated on the issue with @mgifford, @the_g_bomb, @katannshaw, and @drupa11y

Steps to reproduce

  • Switch to the dark mode, activate the Forced Colors mode, and then go to admin/config/content/formats/manage/content_format?destination=/admin/config/content/formats

Proposed resolution

  • Make sure that only the active vertical tab is highlighted and gets visually connected to its content area
  • Add a visible border to that content area and ensure that the content area and the active vertical tab are visually connected
