I have created a patch to solve this issue.

If core key is removed then core_version_requirement key should be altered be to core_version_requirement: ^8.8 || ^9 as the 'core_version_requirement' key is not recognized before drupal version 8.7.7. Adding patch with the change.

The default branch of Fepper Theme has changed to 10.0.x and the older branches are no longer receiving updates because Drupal 10 will be the only supported version in a few days. These patches are not relevant and the status of this issue needs to reflect that.

@e2tha-e How about maintaining a single version, that is portable to all (8 , 9, 10) if D10 version can be back ported? So that users wont accidentally install the older version. And please mark this issue as

The suggested backward compatibility has been ported into v10.0.x, the default branch. Closing.
