Commerce Core - create a logo

Created on 11 May 2023, about 1 year ago
Updated 4 December 2023, 7 months ago

Create a logo that is 512x512 square dimension in PNG format without animations. Suggested file size should be 10k or less. Use a lossy image tool (such as pngquant) to reduce file size while keeping the image quality at around 80%.

MAINTAINERS: The logo should be added to the root folder of the repo, and be named logo.png. This must be present on your project’s default branch. If you have a logo as the first image in the Images field on your project page, please remove it. The logo will be displayed on the cards in the Project Browser grid and list views.

The Commerce Core project page features the Centarro logo, as they are the supporting organisation:

I guess we could use it for project Browser too if we can get a hold of a slightly larger PNG (max 512x512 and 10KB).

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

Centarro are the sponsoring organisation, and it's natural that their logo be associated with Commerce, but we should check with them whether they want their logo to be the commerce logo, or as part of it.

I can think of three approaches:

    1. Use the Centarro logo unaltered, just resized to meet the project browser logo requirements.
    2. Use a specific Commerce logo that incorporates the Centarro logo (possibly a shopping cart with the Centarro bull on the side).
    3. Use a Commerce logo not associated with Centarro (perhaps a shopping cart with the Drupal logo on the side).

I will mention at the next site builder meeting so we can discuss the approach.

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom Dandolorion

    Version 1 - Centarro logo at 512 x 512 transparent background
Version 2 - Centarro logo at 512 x 512 in containing Drupal blue rounded rectangle
Version 3 - Centarro logo with cart at 512 x 512 in containing Drupal blue rounded rectangle
Version 4 - Drupal logo with cart at 512 x 512 in containing Drupal blue rounded rectangle

Those look nice, but just one problem, you have put rounded corners on the images. Project browser applies rounding with CSS. If you remove the rounding and make the logo extend to the corners, these would work well.

By the way, when you complete that, you should set the status to "needs review".

I have created an issue on the Commerce Core queue to get the view of Centarro: 📌 Commerce Core Logo for Project Browser Needs review

    Updated as required.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

I think they all look great. I've made a preview showing how they look in Project Browser, though I've cheated a little by putting two of them on different projects. It should still give the visual impression.

I think it's up to Centarro to decide how they wish to proceed.

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom Dandolorion

My choice would be 'core_commerce_4'. Purely for future proofing if for whatever reason Centarro no longer becomes associated. We have the Drupal logo and the cart so the relationship is there.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

I do like that one, but I found an issue from the D7 days and apparently Commerce used a similar logo back then (it's only described in the issue, and I don't remember what it looked like).

At the moment it seems hard to imagine Commerce without Centarro, but at one point Ubercart seemed the only commerce module Drupal would ever need, so things can change.

Hopefully Centarro will give their preference soon, and we can see how best to proceed.

  • 🇺🇸United States johnpicozzi Providence, RI

So I think here we should focus on the shopping cart with the Drupal logo. Centarro supports Drupal Commerce now, however that is not guaranteed in the future. Linking the Centarro logo with the module logo would make for more work down the road and doesn't make sense to me (or a new user to Drupal).

My suggestion would be to use the shopping cart with the Drupal logo for Commerce Core and then come up with other icons based on the Commerce Core logo for other modules in the echo system. As an example for Commerce PayPal the shopping cart with a PayPal P in it would be good. For Commerce Feeds we should include an outline of their module logo in the shopping cart.

    Good point @johnpicozzi!

I think this one looks great:

Question: should the logo feature this version of the druplicon or a more generic/simple drop? Not sure whether this version is associated with a specific version of Drupal or not.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

    Thanks, @johnpicozzi,

I think that makes logical sense.

Note that the preview I showed above was just to show how the logos look in the Project Browser interface. Because there were several possible logos, I just put them against different Commerce projects for illustration.

I like the idea of related logos for other Commerce projects, but I think they should each have their own issue.

I don't think you've suggested any change to the proposed Commerce Core logo, so I'd suggest this issue should remain Needs Review.

  • 🇺🇸United States johnpicozzi Providence, RI

@tinto Yes! I think that one is good. I would say we should fill in the Drupalicon with a solid color (white) so that we have that space to overlay something for ecosystem modules if need be.

@lostcarpark Yes! this issue should only be for commerce. We can or should create other issues for those other modules. Sorry, I missed the attached proposed logo. I think we need one tweak and then we are good.

The next step for this is to get a final version of the logo, based on my above feedback (if folks agree) in the correct format. Then we can move this to the final phases.

    Thanks All!

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

I like that suggestion, @johnpicozzi. I think a solid white Drupal drop would keep it clear and simple. I don't think we want the version with sunglasses here!

@Dandolorion, do you have time to modify your design?

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom Dandolorion

    Updated. Thank you.

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom Dandolorion

Apologies...wrong one. Image size was incorrect. Updated.

Thank you @dandolorian! I think that looks great.

Dimensions and file size also in accordance with requirements, so that's a double thumbs up from me.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

I think this version looks great, so happy to see it's moved to RTBC.

Here's a preview of it in project browser:

I would love to see similar logos for some of the other Commerce modules. @dandolorian would you be willing to substitute the Drupal logo for other elements such as Stripe for related modules?

I will open issues for the most popular Commerce modules.

  • 🇺🇸United States johnpicozzi Providence, RI

Great work all! Thanks for pushing this over the finish line. Happy to review and/or provide feedback on those other issues if need be.

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom Dandolorion

@lostcarpark - Sure. I can get working on those.

  • 🇳🇱Netherlands tinto Amsterdam

I'd be happy to (co)review them. Feel free to ping me (@Tinto) in the #project-browser channel on Drupal Slack if you need an extra pair if eyes.

I'm not sure I understand what's being decided in here or where the resulting logo should go. Is it something we're supposed to add to Commerce Core itself, based on the description in the OP?

For what it's worth, we're using the Centarro branding generally for Drupal Commerce work, both for the sake of internal (Drupal community) and external (broarder eCommerce marketplace) communication. No bones about that involving self-promotion, but it's also important for the project to be seen as a "led" thing by folks like the PayPals, ShipStations, etc. of the world. (See for example the drupalcommerce.org homepage.)

As such, we'd use a recolored version of the Centarro logo, which we can have our designer do if we know the parameters. If we were to use some sort of cart glyph, it would at least need to match the one we already use in the Admin Toolbar for Commerce ... but absent a compelling reason not to use our logo, we'd stick with that.

To the point that, well, Centarro may not always be around ... fair enough, but at such a time, the logo could just be changed. 🤷🏼‍♂️

From my perspective, the more compelling UX concern would be for the project browser to match what's actually used on d.o and the project homepage.

    Hi @rszrama,

    Thank you for your comment.

First of all, I want to stress that final decision for any module rests with the module maintainers, so there is no intent to impose a logo on your project. I don't think there's any issue with a project's logo being related to the project's main sponsoring/development organization. I totally agree that if Centarro ever ceases to be involved with Commerce Core, it won't be a problem to choose a new logo.

We had made a couple of attempts to reach out to get the Cantarro opinion on suggested logos, and I did feel we were a little premature moving to RTBC.

A couple of the proposed logos are based on the Centarro logo, but of course having your designer produce a version for Project Browser. The requirements are fairly straightforward:

    Resolution: 512x512 pixels
    File size: under 10K
    File format: PNG
    No rounded corners

The logo should be placed in the module repository's root directory, and should be named "logo.png".

We would like to come up with a recommended structure for Commerce ecosystem module logos. The idea of using a shopping cart with either the Drupal or Centarro logo superimposed for Commerce Core (see comment #7 above), would allow other logos to use the shopping cart with other elements. Several have been worked on already:

📌 Commerce PayPal - create a logo Fixed
📌 Commerce Stripe - create a logo RTBC
📌 Commerce Email - create a logo RTBC
📌 Commerce License - create a logo RTBC

If you have any ideas on how other module logos could tie in with the Commerce Core logo, that would be appreciated.

Is there a recommended palette? I know someone proposed a logo in our queue that was multicolor, but generally better just to use the single blue or a variety of related shades?

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

There are no specific rules around color palette, so it's really up to the designer. There have been a variety of styles used for other modules, and many modules have existing logos.

To get a feel for other logos developed as part of Project Browser, you could look at issues marked RTBC under the logo design meta-issue: 📌 [Meta] Create a logo for a contrib module Active .

There would be nothing wrong with just redrawing the current logo to fit the Project Browser specifications, but it should also be placed in the repository for Project Browser to find it.

In an attempt to move this forward :) uploaded the logo of #7 in the open issue 📌 Commerce Core Logo for Project Browser Needs review .

As this looks like it was the preferred approach based on #25

Setting to NR for now, will keep an eye on the other issue as well. 😇
