Call to undefined method getConnection()

• I am moving this bug issue to the 9.5.x branch because there will no longer be ordinary bug fix releases of 9.4.
• I am setting this bug issue to "needs work" as the patches do not apply.
• I am tagging it "needs steps to reproduce" because if the bug is exposing some untested codepath.

Why isn't the connection set?

I don't understand why would load the database connection from the service finder to fix this rather than to find the root cause. This is a workaround.

Is search_api not implementing the correct APIs then?

This is more likely to be a bug in search API or some patch that is applied to search API than it is to be a bug in Drupal core.
