Call for Volunteers: Drupal Events Platform Initiative

Created on 2 March 2021, almost 4 years ago
Updated 10 April 2024, 8 months ago

Purpose

The event website is one of the most important and laborious tasks associated with producing a quality Drupal event. For some events, the website is the main application that helps organize and build the entire experience from collecting session submissions to assigning presentations to the schedule. The Drupal Event Platform (DEP) committee within the Drupal Event Organizers Working Group (EOWG) is looking to reduce the time and resources it takes to create an event website site through the creation of a flexible and customizable website starter kit for event organizers.

Call for Volunteers

The DEP committee is currently looking for 5-7 volunteers to lead the development of the starter kit. This is a great opportunity to contribute back to the Drupal community on a highly visible and impactful project.

The commitment for participating will be to attend the monthly meetings and complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion, approximately 2-6 hours per month.

Meeting Times

We will be meeting on Zoom on the 4th Tuesday of Every month at 2pm EST

Accessibility Specialist
Accessibility is a must for any website, but particularly so for websites serving the Drupal community. We seek volunteers with previous experience with accessibility best practices and testing to lead our accessibility efforts.

Backend Developer
We seek volunteers with experience building Drupal 8/9 websites using best practices. Volunteers should be comfortable with custom module development, Composer, and configuration management.

Designer
Many Drupal event teams donโ€™t have design resources to devise a custom design for their event website so it is important that the out-of-the-box design be suitable for use by many Drupal event websites. We are looking for a volunteer designer to produce a style guide and mockups (low and high fidelity) for the default DEP theme.

Documentation and Training Specialist
Establishing clear guidelines and instructions are critical for adoption, particularly because Drupal event organizers may not have experience creating websites. We are looking for someone who enjoys going through different site-building scenarios and writing easy to understand documentation for event organizers.

Front-End Developer
We are looking for volunteers who have a solid grasp on Drupal site building, Twig templating, and modular CSS frameworks like SASS to implement the design for DEPโ€™s default theme in Drupal 9.

Multilingual Specialist
As Drupal is a global project with events all over the world, we are looking for a volunteer with experience building multilingual websites in Drupal 8/9 to lead our efforts to ensure that DEP is usable by events anywhere in the world.

Along with @sushyl's proposition, we could also take into account the Local Association Europe โ†’ which is in a more active development state.

I am not currently in a state to spend more time working - voluntarily or not - but since this issue exists some time now, I could blend in in the near future.

It seems that initiatives like this stall for some reason: and that is that there has to be some person leading the initiative in every way, including the most important the vision and the support, e.g. few camps really starting with, creating, contributing back while at the same time leaving enough space for the variations.

Often, we stumble upon many architectural choices in many aspects, yet we'd all like to have something that will suit our needs out of the box, with customisation to the content and the addition of specific features.

The LA project seems to be gaining nice momentum and probably this initiative could learn how they manage to make it live and diverse.

I needed a website for our Drupal Camp in Novi Sad (https://ns2024.drupal.rs). We started using Gizra starter (one of the colleagues work there) and Event Platform module but both proved not to be ideal. Gizra Drupal starter has specific concept which is too much backend oriented and Event module is too light not covering many aspects.

We learned a lot from that and were thinking of starting precisely something like this, Events distribution based on Drupal 10/11, recipes, to be easy to customise, to be i18n friendly and be usable out of the box.

We would like to join forces with this initiative (frontend and backend duo).

@macmladen on what basis are you calling this initiative stalled? There may not be a lot of visible, recent changes to the Event Platform project, but in the summer I put some significant work into get new capabilities into Drupal core's Recipes system specifically to better suit what I see as the need for the Event Platform to better work with a variety of front end themes. Also, as I have stated multiple times in the asynchronous meetings of the event organizers slack meetings, I've been waiting for these changes to be available in a release of core before I begin the work of moving the Event Platform to be based on recipes, which will also require spinning the existing PHP code out into separate projects.

I hope you can appreciate that it's more than a little frustrating for me, as someone who has put significant work into the Event Platform for people to come along as broadly state that the project is "too light". Such comments aren't constructive, because they don't point to any specific shortcomings that could be addressed.

All of that said, if anyone has time to help, I would very much appreciate any and all assistance. In the early days of the Event Platform we had monthly meetings, but in time it dwindled to be just me, so I have kept them in my calendar, as a reminder to check in on the project and address any issues that seem urgent. I'd be happy to resurrect those meetings, or we could start a new slack channel.

Hopefully this can be the start of a high level of engagement for the project, and thanks in advance for anyone ready to help.

@mandclu Hey, sorry to trigger but I meant nothing bad! The fact is I've used it and it is serving now. But I did see a lot of things that need work (once I started actually building something) and I totally understand that you are offended. And I can only imagine the amount of time, yet, many are asking this or that.

To be on the constructive side, first of all thanks a lot as it made our camp website operational in less time while also learning about the process. I will submit my opinions as issues once we close the camp and be able to recapitulate what happened and our experiences.

I agree about Recipes and understand just how big it is, to wrap the head and everything about it.

If you accept an apology (though nothing bad was mentioned) I am ready to get active and move the Event Platform module forward (just to clarify, this initiative is based on the module? Or is about the module?)

The stalled comment is based on replies to this thread, the last ten comments are spread over 4 years and that is stalled if you take into account how Drupal is rapidly developing.

I am more inclined to frontend and my friend and colleague Milan @miksha is hard-core backend. I am looking to be the easiest on site-builders being able to do as much as possible by building and tweaking, then with as little styling as needed to get their visual style. I am looking to clean SDC and Tailwind. Not by cluttering templates with tons of classes but using it intelligently to build clean style components.

The next meeting for the Event Platform initiative is planned for Nov 26, 2024 at 2pm EST. Meeting calendar link.

This would be an ideal venue for anyone with constructive feedback, or who would like to help with the ongoing work on the Event Platform.

  • ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ธSerbia MacMladen Novi Sad / Serbia

@mandclu I'd like to join but after clicking, Google Calendar said it could not find the event?

  • ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆCanada mandclu

Hmmm I see what you mean. I posted the information as a page on this site's community events section โ†’ .

We had a good discussion today, but I have a feeling not everyone who wanted to participate in the discussion was able to, potentially because of scheduling issues. I have opened a thread to discuss an alternate time for future meetings: ๐Ÿ“Œ Set time and time for future meetings Active
