Is it possible to easily phase out IMCE as part of an upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, or does it require a big effort, and it is easier to just continue using IMCE?

I think this will help a lot with the upgrade: https://www.drupal.org/project/media_migration β
That's what I used on a project and it worked out pretty well. While it is a major UX change for content creators, with a bit of training they should be able to fly with it.

Thanks @DamienMcKenna, that looks great! I'll try to use that.

I have now tried Media Migration β and it worked flawlessly as a drop in replacement for IMCE, very impressive. All images and videos were imported, as far as I can tell.
This was also my first usage experience with real content in the Media Library module, which I like quite a bit (Thanks Wim Leers!). The file browser works well, though autocomplete would be a nice feature, but that's a minor issue.
I planned to use Colorbox for gallery for multi-value image fields, and initially thought that it would be difficult or impossible after finding β¨ Allow media entity reference fields to be displayed as a gallery in a colorbox Needs review . Luckily, Photoswipe β offers integration with Media Library for galleries.
Thanks again @DamienMcKenna, I really appreciate the tip, it helped me a lot.
