We are facing the same issue. When the 'Require subscribers to Double Opt-in' setting is selected under Signup Form settings, the user is added to the Mailchimp list instantly (with all correct group parameters) but has the status 'Pending'.
We tested this with various new email addresses, multiple domains, and email providers to be sure.
Is the double opt-in email sent directly by Mailchimp and not by Drupal?
We tested this in versions 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 with Drupal 10.3.0.

Removing this patch fixed this image widget issue.
This patch (tested with 3078075-77) converts all characters to lowercase, which breaks some links, e.g., Google Drive documents.
Tested on a simple webform and works as expected. Thanks!
