Is this possible for Drupal 8 and/or above?

To me, this seems a highly desirable feature. An interface with a moderate or large number of markers, but no visible labels, is a hunt & seek interface where orienting information is not immediately available and requires user interaction and undue effort-- and this likely creates user confusion "where do I start" and interaction attrition in many situations.

Thanks!

Is there a reason you're choosing to be so argumentative?  Everything OK in Norway tonight?

While the reasons you've mentioned above no doubt play a role,  it appears that entities seeking Drupal consulting are probably more likely to head to freelancer websites that look for consultants on d.o.

And that is both a shame,  and an ecosystem problem.

>it has never been a very busy forum

That is simply not correct.   There used to be at least several times a week,  pre-Pandemic-ish.

>There has never been a great demand for paid Drupal services from individuals

and there used to be a GREAT demand.

>a lot of hobbyists and NGOs are giving up on Drupal because they cannot deal with the transition to Symfony and a Composer-based workflow

This may or may not be true,   and if so,   perhaps should be taken seriously by the project FWIW.   (git was bad enough !)   (I won't ping Jen Lampton).

OTOH,  a lack of a clear pathway to *find* people who can do what you want,  is also a barrier to entry.
