Request: Moderate Arabic Group

Created on 27 May 2025, 3 months ago

The group moderator is Alaa Abdel Fattah(alaa and he's been unavailable for more than 10 years. I know the guide says to wait for 2 weeks but in this case I'm sure we're not getting a response back from him(he would have loved the idea though).
I'm willing to bring this group back to life and just the chance to approve existing suggestions alone will be a huge progress for the Arabic language.

    Hello..any news?

  • πŸ‡±πŸ‡§Lebanon layalk

Bumping this again...it's been more than a month and I reached out to several people linked to the original maintainers but got no reply.

  • πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·Greece bserem

First of all let me clarify that I'm not a member of the Arabic translation group, but I've been around translations and I'm the manager of the Greek group for too many years (way too many) so I have very good idea about how things work with translation teams. You need someone dedicated to handle things.

Knowing @layalk I can vouch for her reviving the Arabic group. Translations are always hard and people often lose interest after their project is done, especially in languages where Drupal is still trying to get momentum. On the other hand, Drupal is losing ground especially because the translations are not readily available. It's a vicious cycle.

Layal has been in the Drupal community for years and is as committed as ever. If anyone can revive that group and move things forward it's her.

I fully suggest we proceed with the management change.

Thanks @laylalk for offering to maintain Arabic and @bserem for vetting @layalk, and recommending her. I agree that some parts of Drupal (such as the multilingual part) could do with some more focus.

@bserem: Since you already maintain several projects, and this project is "Seeking co-maintainer(s) -- Maintainers are looking for help reviewing issues." perhaps you could consider applying to become maintainer β†’ ?

@ressa I'd be honored to help here and I'm honored by your suggestion. Right now I've applied for a different position inside drupal.org which would demand a lot of my time if it becomes a reality.
As I hate to start things and not finish them I'll wait for the other process to come to a conclusion before I apply here. I should know in the next couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, lets get @layalk the tools she needs to get that translation going.

I totally understand @bserem, it's important to not spread yourself too thin, by trying to cover too many tasks. So let's see how it turns out with your other application, which I hope you get!

  • πŸ‡±πŸ‡§Lebanon layalk

Thank you @bserem @ressa for your support.
How can we get this moving then?

  • πŸ‡©πŸ‡°Denmark ressa Copenhagen

Since the https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/reference-information... β†’ doc page was originally based on https://www.drupal.org/docs/develop/managing-a-drupalorg-theme-module-or... β†’ it could be used for inspiration ...

Perhaps you could consider reaching out to some of the https://www.drupal.org/project/localizedrupalorg β†’ administrators via the Contact tab on their profile page, since an individual language could be considered a "sub-project"? :)

I also now notice that it says "4 followers", so if that's the three of us, it seems that most maintainers are not automatically subscribed to new localize.drupal.org issues, and have not been alerted to this issue.

There was also #2788937: Arabic language moderators are not active β†’ but the person did not come back after waiting for answers. Gave you all the admin roles in the Arabic group, this allows you to add more moderators.

Thanks a lot @gabor..is it possible we do a manager change as well??
