I think Contribution is still a valuable category to have. Not every event has organized contribution opportunities, so it can be helpful to see all the events/places where contribution is taking place.

I am voting for the following categories:
- DrupalCamp
- DrupalCon
- Awards/Ceremony
- Training
- Meetup
- Drupal initiative meeting
- Contribution
-> needed?
I am considering whether 'Drupal initiative meeting' and 'Contribution' are cancelling each other out. Initiatives are meeting in various occasions, so why do they need their own format for contributing to the community?
Question here, also with regards to the Open Web Alliance -> do we need some kind of category that includes all other events that are related to the Drupal community but dealing with some other technology? I kept the 'External technology event' in my previous list for that reason.
What do you think?

Maybe we need just a "other" type, so if it does not fit in the provided ones, ther is then still an "other" term to choose.
- ๐บ๐ธUnited States heatherwoz Seattle
I do not think we should add an "other" category. It is literally "othering." Ever since I've started thinking about inclusive language, I've tried to avoid that term in option lists. In terms of usability, it would make the list of options longer without adding much value. It might not be used very often, and users have no idea what to expect when they select it. And regarding content quality, it might invite other kinds of random events. It would need to be more descriptive than "other" to be useful.
Maybe if we can generate a list of example events, it would help us come up with a category. What are some specific events that would be posted on the Drupal Community Events calendar that don't fall into the proposed list?

How about the Drupal Developers Days? And Business meet-ups versus tech meet-ups?
I would vote for:
DrupalCamp
DrupalCon
Drupal Developers Day
DrupalFest
Awards/Ceremony
Training
Business Meetup
Tech Meetup
Drupal initiative meeting
External technology event - ๐บ๐ธUnited States heatherwoz Seattle
Discussed the categories again with several people in the contrib room. Updating the issue summary with the requested changes and moving to Drupal.org customizations project.
Here are some of the notes from the old summary:
Related to the old issue to add a new "Award / Ceremony" Category over at https://www.drupal.org/community/events/ โ , we had a discussion over at the async Event Organizers Open Meeting, we tried to narrow down the list of needed Event Categories.
Thread: https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C03KZ3BETNH/p1723565700179009Here is the actual list we came up to:
- DrupalCamp
- DrupalCon
- Awards/Ceremony
- Training
- Meetup
- Drupal initiative meeting
- Contribution
Thoughts:
Name it only meetup instead of Local meetup, as we have now filters for "Online/Virtual" or "In person" events
Award/ Ceremony <- there also a release party will have it's placeQuestions:
DrupalCamp or Drupal Camp
Drupal initiative meeting or just Initiative meeting? <- do we need it?
Contribution <- do we need it?
Replace Drupal initiative meeting and Contribution with just a "Meeting" category? - ๐บ๐ธUnited States B_man California, USA
I think we need to keep "External technology event". It was deliberately added as a place to put events where Drupal is being represented at an event that isn't specifically about Drupal.
I do think it would be good to have some sort of guidance for users when they're adding events as to which event types they should choose for their event.

The issue summary looks all good to me. Are there any open questions or likely revisions?
In general, removing options would be tough, since we will have to migrate the existing content to not use those values before we remove the options. Right now there are no removals requested in the issue summary.
- ๐บ๐ธUnited States heatherwoz Seattle
Correct, there are no proposed removals right now, just renaming things and reordering to make them easier to scan. No open questions, though I think it's likely we may want to update categories again in the future. Hopefully any further changes can wait until events are migrated to the D10 site.

Iโve done the initial updates to the fields. Iโll plan to make the same changes to the โEvents for all!โ block on the right side of https://www.drupal.org/community/events โ . Any updates for the copyediting there would be welcome.
- ๐บ๐ธUnited States drumm NY, US
This is all deployed and Iโve updated the block on https://www.drupal.org/community/events โ
Thanks!

@drumm super! I think the only description in the sidebar that needs an update is Ceremony/awards. How about "a special event to celebrate a major Drupal release or the accomplishments of our community members."
- ๐บ๐ธUnited States sikofitt
e.g. over at Drupical.org acolono GmbH has to adopt to the new categories, so it still maps correctly
maybe also Droptimes event listing?I was curious if this is on The Drop Times radar, if they know they need to check their event listing categories?
- ๐บ๐ธUnited States heatherwoz Seattle
@sikofitt, good point, I will mention to them in Slack. Looking at their website, it seems like they are usually slightly different categories already, so not sure how they are pulling/mapping them.

Thanks, done!

I've also migrated the labels to the new Drupal site so when we migrate they show with these new ones.
