Short: I needed a working solution to use the IntlExtension functions. So I created https://www.drupal.org/project/twig_intl →
Please decide to list it on the module page as alternative or even possibly as simple replacement. Thank you very very much for this module @joelpittet - that was the foundation!
If there was still more activity here, I wouldn't have created that replacement, but I guess it makes sense?
