Show list of announcements, at least once or by default, and turn on/off in a setting

Problem/Motivation

This is an awesome feature, thanks for making it!

I do think the Announcements link can get overlooked. I fear it could be a repeat of the situation with the wonderful Tour module (see πŸ“Œ Make Tour link more visible Needs work ) where I think adaption and usage was damaged by the position in the upper right corner. I think most users did not notice it, and therefore didn't use it, which is a shame.

Steps to reproduce

Log into Drupal and miss that there is an Announcements link in the upper right corner, with important information.

Proposed resolution

Show it at least once on first log in, or make it a setting:

  1. Pop open the list of announcements once, when admin users log in. This will alert them that this is an important channel of information, raising the likelihood that they will remember this, and occasionally scan that area for changes and click "Announcements". When the user closes the announcement list, a flag can be set (user_has_seen_announcement_list) so that the list does not pop up on next log in.
  2. It could be a setting. Add the text "Don't want to see this announcement list every time you log in? Disable it." below "View all announcements", at the bottom of the list, linking to an "Announcements" config page with this option:

x Show Announcement list on log in

After disabling it, the user now has to actively click the "Announcements" link to get the list.

I think the goal is to move the notifications into a standardized dashboard, so I'm not sure if that goal conflicts with this suggestion.

Agree with @fjgarlin, I consider the Announcements toolbar link and the off-canvas list to be a temporary placeholder until we have Dashboard in place. A Dashboard is a much more logical long-term home for the feed.

Thanks @fjgarlin and @AaronMcHale for fast responses, I really appreciate it.

Showing notifications in a dedicated dashboard sounds like a great idea. I guess something like CiviCRM has, with a block of recent news at the bottom of the page when admin users log in?

The important part, as far as I see it, is that announcements are displayed automatically and presented to the user in a list, with no action from the user, so they are certain to be alerted to new announcements. The user shouldn't have to click a link, to access a dashboard.

I'll close this issue, since there are other issues for the planned dashboard. But if the plan is to make a solution with a dashboard, which is not presented automatically to the user, this issue can be reopened, for discussion about that.

I'll make sure to subscribe to the issue you mention, and relevant child issues.

    Have a nice day.

The user shouldn't have to click a link, to access a dashboard.

There hasn't been a formal decision yet, but I feel like having the Dashboard be the first thing users see after logging in makes sense.
