Side bar blocks order: thinking about the UI/UX

Created on 1 March 2023, over 1 year ago
Updated 21 March 2024, 8 months ago

Problem/Motivation

When the Localize page is opened, and after choosing the language/community and clicked on the "overview" tab, the right sidebar is made of 3 blocks (at least in the french community).

  1. "Top contributors"
  2. "Translation statistics"
  3. "French team"

Wouldn't it be interesting to put the "French team" block first in the sidebar ?

Proposed resolution

Reflect together, we can use wireframes if needed.
Integrate changes in css and settings if needed.

We can pack the links to the top, of course. However, one should not underestimate gamification in the top contributor block. In Germany, there has only been an increase in the number of existing translations since 2016. With the departure of the Maintainer, who had mainly managed the project until then, it was first a matter of driving him out of the pole position.

The thing is that there are always a few people who claim to be the most beautiful, the best or the most amazing. Even when it comes to translating Drupal into their language. So the real UX question here is: How do we make the statistics section in the sidebar even more attractive, or is there more gamification?

If we can answer yes to the first question, we might get more volunteer translators in all languages. After that, we can think about positioning the elements in the sidebar.

Assuming the scenario I outlined is justified, the Top Contributors block must remain at the top of the page. The arrangement of the following blocks plays a subordinate role and is, therefore, unimportant. By the way, the performance of the blocks is currently the same in every team.

From a design point of view, I think it would be much nicer to have a meaningful dashboard that the public can view. Who did which translation last and when. GitHub insights currently do a good job and could serve as a design example for the new statistics part of the service.

If we can get this functionality right, the top-contributors block can be removed entirely and replaced by a simple button.

I know this comment contains much more information than the answer to the question, but I thought I'd let you know what I think would be helpful as a maintainer for a new server.

Answering the question to start with, I value most the top contributors, followed by team and the statistics.

The the current contributor list and statistics do not provide great value. What. It does provide is:

    • How small/large the community is, how active
    • Who are top contributors, who is experienced, who can I trust
    • What is the state of reviews, is there a small or large pool of to be reviewed, what is the chance of getting my stuff reviewed

All this info is only usefull for the big picture not for everyday translation work.
And it only counts approved translations, not (open or rejected) suggestions, in other words, it is biased towards the experienced translators.

A redesign of contributor list and statistics towards usefulness for both the big picture and everyday work is interesting, but beyond the scope of this issue.

After the agreement in the weekly meeting, we would like to create/open another new issue to improve “Top contributors” and “Statistics” blocks in order to have meaningful dashboards as explained in the previous comments.

So, in this issue we would like to take into account:

    Question:

How can we make it easier and faster to contribute (to make translations)?

    Motivation:

Get more volunteer translators, making it faster and easier to make translations.

The Join button is displayed on the bottom (taking into account the main point is Join and Contribute), we would like to move the "Join" button to the top (It can be independent of the Language block). So, it would be easier and faster to access it, please see the image attached:

    Suggestion:

Probably in the Language team block (for example French team) can go Manager's name directly in case there are some doubts or questions? Please see the image below:

  • 🇧🇪Belgium gwenweb

I agree that the "Join" button should be moved to the top and that it should be independent of the Language block.

@veronicanerak had summarized the flow :

    1. Go to https://localize.drupal.org/ -> visit the project, which lists all the available languages and a block to choose the wanted language
    2. Select the language you want to contribute, for example: Portuguese, Brazil
    3. Once we are on the right language page, our block join Language's name team should be displayed on the top
  • 🇧🇴Bolivia veronicanerak

Adding some screenshots displaying the blocks suggested.

Once the user chooses the language from the available languages in order to create translations:

Case 1: In case the user is not logged in and for example, the language selected was "French", please see the screenshot:

Case 2: The user is logged in, "Join..." button is displayed, please see:

@veronicanerak looks great! Thanks for joining our table on Friday. I think this particular point deserves to be implemented. I hope we will be able to discuss this next Thursday.
