State Machine - Update logo

Created on 12 August 2022, almost 2 years ago
Updated 15 January 2024, 6 months ago

Create a logo that is 512x512 square dimension in PNG format without animations. Suggested file size should be 10k or less. Use a lossy image tool (such as pngquant) to reduce file size while keeping the image quality at around 80%.

MAINTAINERS: The logo should be added to the root folder of the repo, and be named logo.png. This must be present on your project’s default branch. If you have a logo as the first image in the Images field on your project page, please remove it. The logo will be displayed on the cards in the Project Browser grid and list views.

I've been thinking about this one for a while. I love old Victorian woodcut prints of exotic machines, but I was trying to think how to incorporate something about state. Eventually, I gave up and decided to just trace a machine woodcut.

Unfortunately, my first attempt would not compress anywhere near 10kb, but I like it so I'm sharing anyway:

To reduce the file size, I decided to leave out a portion of the machine. This one I managed to reduce to 10kb - just!

While I'm sad to leave out part of the machine, I think this one actually looks better as a logo.

I've put together a preview of how it looks in project browser...

I am worried a bit about color contrast.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

I think you are right, contrast isn't great, and looking at it again, I think I have lost too much of the original concept.

    So I've tried something else:

Still a Victorian machine, but more stylaised, and simplified. I hope people can make the leap from steam engine to state machine.

Here's a preview of the logo:

    Appreciate if someone could review.

@lostcarpark. Nice job on that logo. Do you think something more along the line of state and transitions would be better? States could be a light bulb being on or off perhaps. There are some traffic light examples on a google search. What do others think?

    Hi all,

Please see attached my take on the required icon. Going with the simple binary 1 and 0 which can mean ON/OFF, YES/NO, TRUE/FALSE etc...

    Thanks

As discussed on Tuesday, I have made an alternative version, with lightbulbs and arrows indicating state changes.

    I have prepared a preview:

However, I really like Dandolorion's take in it, particularly the last, more colorful version. I've made a preview of that one:

Thanks @lostcarpark, your suggestion is good, but I agree with you that @Dandolorion's #3 is also very nice.

I do think there are many icons with large color backgrounds, and in this case, maybe it can be removed? Also, the zero has a dark background, which could be brighter, to enhance the contrast. Here's a rough draft of the changes I made in GIMP, so the changes should be made in @Dandolorion's file. No background, and more pink background for the "0".

    Small version

+1 on Dandolorion's state_machine_3.png and like the red and green colors which are familiar to all.

    Thanks all. moving to RTBC
