Address project - Update Logo

Created on 29 May 2022, about 2 years ago
Updated 27 February 2024, 4 months ago

Create a logo that is 512x512 square dimension in PNG format without animations. Suggested file size should be 10k or less. Use a lossy image tool (such as pngquant) to reduce file size while keeping the image quality at around 80%.

MAINTAINERS: The logo should be added to the root folder of the repo, and be named logo.png. This must be present on your project’s default branch. This is the logo that will be displayed on the cards in the Project Browser grid and list views.
If you previously added a logo as the first image in the Images field on your project page, please remove it. Project Browser will no longer be using the first image as the logo.

  • New design works well at low resolutions.
Clear what it is and can see the stamp.

I think we need to do somesthing about the rounded corners. I wonder if expanding the lighter gray in the middle, removing the black border, and making the border a thicker candy-stripe as a square would work?

I understand the guidelines say to avoid rounded corners, but I believe that relates to the outer edge of the logo box. In this case, the rounded corners are part of the design, and there is a border around the design, so the rounded envelope does not extend to the corners of the containing box. This image shows the logo on a green background to illustrate the space around the edges:

I've done a mockup of the logo as it will appear on the project browser, but I've superimposed on a blue background showing the full size of the logo with the PB rounded corners applied to show that the envelope does not extend to the corners of the box.

Received the following feedback from @dww in the Address project:

Nice, thanks! Mostly looks great. But I don't love the red, white and blue stripes. A bit too nationalistic for my tastes, especially as someone living in the belly of the empire. Is it easy to tweak this logo? Here are some proposals, I'd be happy with any of them:

Can the stripes be a rainbow instead of only 3?
If we want/need to stick with 3, how about purple, green and gold? I associate those with Mardi Gras (I grew up in New Orleans), and I'm not aware of a specific country that uses those.
If it's really 2 alternating colors on the "white" background, how about using purple instead of the current red?

    Thanks!

I like Derek's idea of rainbow stripes, so I've had a go at that. I like it!

    Fantastic, thanks!

Doesn't this resemble pride flags a bit too much? As that has not really anything to do with the address project 🙂

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

@BramDriesen, That's a valid point. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with that.

My original reasoning behind the blue and red stripes was it's something commonly seen on airmail letters, but it probably has its origins in flags of colonial nations. An alternative would be to have no colours in the border at all.

  • 🇺🇸United States dww

Yeah, I have no problem with it resembling pride flags. The intention was to somehow convey "international" without invoking any specific country. If an inclusive rainbow also invokes LGBTQ+ rights, all the better (IMHO). FWIW, there are rainbows all over the license plates and drivers licenses where I live, so it's also appropriate from that dimension. 😂

I have no problem with that either 😉 it was just a remark!

Anyway, if the maintainers are OK with this I see no reason not to go for this version.

While I love the rainbow version, just for my own curiosity I did a couple of alternative versions.

First one in my own national colours:

And the obligatory Mardi Gras version:

Slight preference to the orange and green one. Mardi grass is also cool :) up to the maintainer I would say.

  • 🇺🇸United States dww

I vote rainbows or Mardi Gras. I left a comment for the other address maintainer to weigh in if they have any preferences.

    Thanks again, everyone!

Honestly I preferred the original logo by a mile. Didn't even cross my mind to associate the red & blue with any flag colors.

    Purple&green feels garish.

The rainbow is now universally associated with LGBT movements, so I feel like the rainbow makes the logo look seasonal (one color scheme for pride week, one for halloween, etc).

This leaves orange and green. So I vote for that one.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland lostcarpark

I didn't intend to cause any controversy!

As an alternative option, here's one with no border, and hopefully no danger over causing upset over flags...

As maintainers of the module, it's up to you to to decide what you prefer. I'm happy to do other variants if helpful.

The one without border also looks good imo

Setting back to Needs Review until decision is made on the logo to use. I think the borderless one is probably the least controversial, so would suggest we go with that.

  • 🇷🇸Serbia bojanz

    Let's go borderless.

RTBC in that case. Updated the logo in the issue fork of the child issue as well.
