Best to use the token support in combination with views.
Allowing custom icons via the current:
works great, but it doesn't allow you to choose a default icon or for multiple sources if content items in the view use different fields for their icons.
I tried rewriting and setting a no results value for the icon source field as well, but neither had an effect.
The use case for this would be if you were attempting to show multiple content types on the same map, but say the "farms" content type was using a "produce" taxonomy field for its icons, and the "transportation" content type was using a "modes" taxonomy field for its icons. The current setup only allows for custom icons from one source to be shown for those items.
