Statistics is approved for removal. See π± [Policy] Deprecate Statistics module in D10 and move to contrib in D11 Fixed
This is now Postponed. The status is set according to two policies. The Remove a core extension and move it to a contributed project β and the Extensions approved for removal β policies.
It will be moved to a contributed Statistics project once the project is created and the Drupal 11 branch is open.

This thread starts with how statistics module could be improved by having it enabled by default and ends over 9 years later with it being removed all together?
Remarkably, from the statistics I have seen usage is over 5% of installed sites, even though this is disabled by default.

Seconding your position. I've added extra info on π± [Policy] Deprecate Statistics module in D10 and move to contrib in D11 Fixed .

My feeling is it will be more work to remove statistics than to keep it. i.e. still need to create a contrib module and factor out core dependencies as well as creating more work for contrib modules that leverage this.

The question is - does this fit in scope for the 1.x branch, given it's kind of an important fix to the module's logic, or should it be a 2.x thing as it's a change in functionality. I would vote for 1.x because it's a DrupalWTF and probably confuses a lot of people.
