I need to relearn the drupal way a bit here, it's been a while. I got quite confused with the gitlab & drupal integration.
I merged your MR on gitlab directly and saw the issue was still open on drupal.org
You should have gotten credited now if everthing worked out.

Did you look at the plugin system where you can hook in your own field handlers?
This starter kit shows how to do it.
While I get what your trying to do, changing this might break entity references for others.
