Advanced Forum has reached the end of its life and I don’t think it will come back. An option which I’m exploring at the moment is to use React as a front end and Drupal with its Forum module as a headless CMS. That would combine the power of Drupal with a responsive and modern UI.
Having looked at Discourse as an alternative, and installed it locally, I can say it is not for the faint hearted. Being a web app based on Ruby on Rails it presents a steep learning curve for a developer used to PHP. Another possible option could be Open Social ( https://www.drupal.org/project/social → ) which is based on Drupal. Either option presents challenges in migrating forum data and re-educating users.
A simple solution is to use the Advanced settings and set a default of a single space for each of the required fields, like so:
