On Debian and Debian based systems, it's necessary to add a couple of ini_set()s to the settings.php
file, otherwise the session garbage collection of PHP (and Drupal) would never run resulting in very, very large sessions table.
The instructions are at http://drupal.org/node/35834 I wonder if this should be included somewhere in the installation guide as a Hint or so. It was really helpful.

Correction/Clarification
Primarily changes documentation, not code. For Drupal core issues, select the Documentation component instead of using this tag. In general, component selection is preferred over tag selection.
Used in Documentation issues for documentation problems related to servers, such as installing/configuring/debugging Apache, MySql, PostgreSQL, etc.
