In https://www.drupal.org/project/cqri → , there is an experimental support for container query on the picture tag.
I wonder if would be possible to integrate it in RIFT to make it the flawless solution for images (or at least one step closer to flawless :)). Or giving a look at how cqri works to put the idea in RIFT directly.
Maybe it can be a "RIFT source plugin".
I have not made the cqri module and the JS library but I can reach the authors if needed.

An existing effort is going on to provide this support via a contrib module. As an initial step a 2.x-dev version has been released which focus on modifying the codebase so that others can modify/extend rift.
