Thanks for pointing out these issues. The first should not have an impact on the custom book block. The second may have an impact. We will take a closer look once there is a stable 3.0 release. Feel free to test compatibility beforehand.

I might not have a full overview of what this module does, but could one way forward be to suggest to incorporate what this module does into Book 3? It seems the additions here are quite non intrusive and could easily just be a part of the main module.

I agree with @vegardjo's proposal. This seems like a good time to investigate whether this can be rolled into the main module.

If a maintainer of the Book module agrees, we can work towards porting the features over. However, it would require more work, as test coverage is currently not provided by the Custom Book Block module.
Yes this sounds good, please open a feature request on Book and we can continue the work there.
