Are you saying that you created a new custom content type 'News', rather than using the content type provided by the Drupal CMS recipe?

If so, you likely either need to do some theming to make the existing card template work, or modify the content type's teaser so that it matches what the template expects.

The theme that ships with Drupal CMS won't necessarily work perfectly with new content types. It is provided mostly for demo purposes, we expect most sites will develop a custom theme.
