Proximity of sticky action buttons to user menu

Created on 2 December 2024, 16 days ago

I find that about 30% of the time that I try to use a sticky action button in the upper-right-hand-corner, I overshoot and so inadvertently hover the user menu so that the menu opens and covers the button I'm trying to click.

I imagine this gets worst the larger the screen, as the tendency it to kind of just throw the cursor to the corner before trying to then precisely target the button.

Attaching a slow motion reenactment to show what I mean:

The issue you're describing is a common usability problem in UI design. This is due to the Sticky action button location. The sticky action button is positioned in the upper-right corner of the interface. The user menu s positioned near to the sticky action button. So users often move their mouse quickly to the corner to click the button. As the result, If the cursor overshoots the sticky action button, it triggers the user menu dropdown, which then obstructs the button.

The possible solutions or suggestions i can think of is " Increase the Distance Between the Sticky Button and User Menu".

I'm going to close this as works as designed. We're working on improving the sticky bar and bring it to Core, so this will eventually be addressed in the new iteration. But as this is a minor issue (like ahsannazir described) I don't see any action needed at this time (as we're working on the new sticky bar). Btw the navigation menus should potentially open on click instead of hover which would fix this issue but that's something which would need to be fixed in the admin_toolbar module.

It's quite complex and a lot of modules are involved.

Ah, thanks @saschaeggi — I honestly thought the user menu dropdown was a part of Gin and not admin_toolbar, or else I would have posted there.

It's kinda both. But as I mentioned we're working on a new top bar which will address this.

If you enable the new Core navigation you'll already have the user menu being relocated into the new navigation.
