Error when entering comma-separated usernames

Problem/Motivation

This was spotted by @herved while reviewing 🐛 Fix test pipeline issues Active

When entering some comma-separated usernames in the autocomplete, we get a PHP followed by AJAX error.
At /private-message/create, enter "foo,bar,baz" in "To" field. It takes a few retries sometimes, seems intermittent.
