How to use without Smart date

This module can be used with any date formatter that supports the Day Augmenter API. As far as I know, that is currently limited to Smart Date, but other formatters could be made compatible with a small amount of code, or your could extend the core formatter and add your own compatibility.

I could also add that the Smart Date formatter can be used on core date fields, and also Smart Date provides a drush command to migrate values from core date fields to Smart Date fields.

Also to clarify my previous comment, what would be needed for a different formatter to be able to use this module would be for it to add support for the Date Augmenter API → . There is a documentation page → that explains the specific code required.
