Announcements feed: Create upcoming camps post

Created on 15 July 2024, 5 months ago

Had a discussion with @xjm (and several others) at https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C02AFHAUNET/p1720963215805399

The original discussion was sparked because we didn't announce 10.3 (although we did announce 10.2). I also asked about announcing camps etc

From @xjm

Let's compromise: You want to make a post draft for upcoming camps right now, and file an issue to review and schedule it? :slightly_smiling_face:

This will be worked on at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cp6HaqiuxozVJd-NGorLZd_buyRaDeqZv3_N...

Followups

  1. File a feature request to provide localized events.d.o information on the Announcements feed, and/or...
  2. Followup to sticky a link to events.d.o at the top of the feed.

I put a few notes in the doc. There are nine upcoming events β†’ in Aug-Nov., which seems like too many for a worldwide post. Even if we restrict it to Aug-Oct. there are still seven, mostly in NA. How do we pick which are important enough for international content? Listing four NA camps, two EU camps, and one camp in Asia is also still lopsided and shows an NA bias.

Maybe we should make the post more high-level and include an intro section about Drupal camps in general and events.d.o?

We also may want not to detail the camps directly in the post, but rather direct folks directly to the /community/events page?

It could even be as simple as an 'announcement' teaser that says 'Check out upcoming Drupal events' and just links to /community/events instead of a blog.

Or we could try and build a block that shows an event preview.

My thought is that the off-canvas only shows the title and date. So, IMO there's no reason to keep things super short, as long as it's easily scannable and not too drawn out.

Anyway, feel free to disagree, but I wrote an initial draft halfway down the document. I split up the events by continent, and didn't omit any (which would likely piss people off).

IMO it doesn't seem too long or windy. Thoughts?

Added the idea of just stickying events.d.o to the IS followups.
