Write content for Drupal CMS Differentiators vs. WordPress

Created on 11 July 2024, over 1 year ago

Problem/Motivation

To target users considering WordPress or comparing with WordPress, we want to present Drupal's strengths.

We need to create content (e.g. comparison chart) and areas where Drupal shines (multilingual, accessibility) that would particularly appeal to the target audiences for Starshot.

TBD if we need a separate wireframe for this.

I can work on this as part of the long form content work.

I am interested in the market of starshot.
I've recently fallen into creating Drupal "news" videos, and Starshot is such a wonderful initiative, I'd love to see it flourish.

I follow the above link to view the working document and was denied access.

An update in this issue would be great.

Did this happen / do we still plan to do it / do we need to credit folks?

I may end up doing an OOTB performance comparison between Drupal CMS and Wordpress. Whether the results of that will be something to add to a marketing page is a different question though (both the format and also whether it's better or not!).

So much comes down to governance models and IP. Drupal is specifically set up to not rely on a benevolent dictator's good wishes. What you find on Drupal is GPL or GPL Compatible code, so licensing is very straight forward. I don't know if folks have paraphrased the idea of, "come for the code, stay for the community" in WP.

Accessibility is a bug in Drupal, where more of a feature request in WP. Sustainability is also something that there is support behind from this community.

Here's the Drupal CMS vs WordPress performance comparison mentioned in #9: https://www.tag1consulting.com/blog/drupal-cms-vs-wordpress-performance-...

Drupal comes out better on almost all fronts fwiw although this can be quickly reversed if you enable one or the other optional recipes (although same for Wordpress plugins I expect).

Can someone set up a drupal page for this instead of using a Google Doc? the google doc is private. (even just a blank page in the correct location will wok for now). We can all contribute openly there.

Is this best as a dedicated page or as a component on pages like /why-drupal?

Whichever is faster to set up. Won't a dedicated page need some design elements to go with it (hence will take longer)? If so, best to get the easiest option going, we can migrate it later if necessary. Additionally, this issue is more specific than just "why drupal".

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion. I have created the stub landing page for this (unpublished) https://new.drupal.org/node/10000067

For now I have called the page 'Drupal CMS or Wordpress?' rather than the more adversorial 'Drupal vs Wordpress' but obviously that can be modified. All I have added so far is the hero, using content from the google doc, but what is really needed is a good way to present the comparison information. Thoughts?

    Sorry I can't access that link :(

Can you publish that page so others can work on it?

but what is really needed is a good way to present the comparison information.

In my opinion, a tabular format is great for this as was done in the google doc.

I've never used Wordpress, but did come across this video linked from another article, that gives an ex-Drupal-and-now-Wordpress-developer's opinions on Drupal CMS. I found it quite interesting how much they seemed to like the new Drupal CMS interface. Some of the comments are also informative.
