When working with complex menu structures, the sidebar was not respecting the "expanded" state correctly.
Create hierarchical menu and deselect "Expand all menu links". Then refresh the page where the sidebar menu block is displayed and review the HTML. You'll note the class "expanded" is not in the right place and the menu is not in fact respecting it being collapsed or hidden.
Move the twig stanza which creates the variable value so it is situated in the correct place.
