When I read this from the project description:
"Introduced with 8.x-1.4 it is now possible to get suggestion for the Alternative text on image upload. The suggestion will only be made, if the Alternative text field is enabled for the image field used."
What I am hoping is that when it is configured properly, on uploading an image, an alt text is suggested to the author. They are then prompted to review it to ensure that it makes sense in the context of what they are uploading.
They can then either approve it or correct it and it will become the official alt text.
I would assume that if the alt text is already present in an image that the ML will not be engaged.
I would see this as a very good practice to emulate. Lots of people have difficulty coming up with alternative text, and seeing a blank page is intimidating.
Would also be useful to ensure that the ML isn't providing text that would break a checker like this:
