As a general rule, I don't like to have two recommend versions, and if there is a widely used stable version I typically don't mark the newer version as recommended until it's stable.
I can't comment specifically on your individual website, but I will say that to date all the changes in the 4.1.x branch are bug fixes. The reason for the minor version change is that I wanted to incorporate the changes in π Far-future dates cause WSOD, "Numeric value out of range" Fixed in a beta release, because it includes database updates.
If anything 4.1.0-rc2 SHOULD be more stable than 4.0.3, but so far the usage of the 4.1.x branch is modest in comparison. There is a theoretical possibility more fixes will be needed as more sites move to this branch, but people are still finding edge cases that could be better handled by older branches like the 3.6.x and 3.7.x versions of Smart Date.
The best advice is to thoroughly test the 4.1.0-rc2 version on a non-production version of your site, and determine for yourself if there are any issues. If so, please open issues and I will get to them as quickly as I can. I'm hoping to make the 4.1.x branch stable in the next couple of weeks, at which point it will become the recommended version.
