How do you know if your website or app is accessible? You can audit it against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. You can test with users of assistive technology and people with disabilities. But how do you quantify your accessibility? In the world of UX, we have the System Usability Scale to measure experiences. Now, we have a new tool, the Accessible Usability Scale, to measure the experience of assistive technology users. It's a 10-question survey that will give you a numeric score that you can use to compare and evaluate experiences across different digital products, websites and apps. This adapted version of the System Usability Scale better captures the lived experience of assistive technology users in task-oriented research. With hundreds of AUS results reviewed and synthesized since 2020, Fable researchers have been building a practice of evaluating UX with the AUS as a key tool. This presentation will explore why a new measurement tool was needed to effectively capture assistive technology user experiences, and the usability trends that have been uncovered since its implementation.

SHORT VERSION:
How do you know if your website or app is accessible? If you’re testing with users of assistive technology (AT) and people with disabilities, this gives you real-life experiences that lead to design improvements. But how do you quantify these results? This presentation will explore why a new measurement tool was needed to effectively capture assistive technology user experiences.
