Present

  • Angie Byron
  • George DeMet
  • Adam Hill

Absent

  • Donna Benjamin

Agenda

  • Alert about dispute in around event organizers not involving the local community in planning/execution of major regional event, as well as concerns about undue influence of one particular company. After talking to reporter and to CWG, two recommendations:
    1) A "best practice" guide on how to balance volunteers/getting stuff done in creating local events. There is existing work at https://groups.drupal.org/node/136494 and likely other sources which could be expanded upon.
    2) Set up a hangout with event organizers / members of local community to figure out a way to have a healthy relationship going forward.
  • Bullying/harassment report involving an end-user on IRC and several high-profile members of the community. The end-user has been pinging several module maintainers asking to get patches they need committed, and is frustrated by lack of response. In turn, maintainers are frustrated because end user has been quite insistent, and they feel like they're being asked to volunteer faster, when they're already stretched extremely thin with their existing contributions.

Because Donna was absent and has dealt the most with this situation to-date, we decided to table discussion of this incident until next meeting. But in general, it was discussed that we need:

    1) A policy document on what proper etiquette is for this situation, because right now this basically lives in peoples' heads. "In-kind" labour trades have been cited before, but those are not universally recognized across maintainers/projects, especially from non-technical people. If people don't know the right thing to do, it's not realistic to expect them to do it.
    2) Some of the mediation strategies talked about in the last meeting, to help people (especially those with a bigger voice) in the community understand how to communicate better with each other and with others in the community.

Decisions/Actions Taken

  • None.

Action Items

  • Angie to follow-up with local community members and event organizers to arrange a time to speak.
  • Adam to follow-up with bullied community member to acknowledge receipt of report and provide timeline for resolution.
  • Barring emergencies, set agenda of next meeting dedicated to dealing with conflicts involving high-profile community members. This keeps coming up over and over and the "trickle down" effects are extremely damaging to the project and existing community.
