Make 2.x the default development / checkout branch

Problem/Motivation

@Maintainers:

Currently 8.x-1.x is still the default branch at GitLab. That's dangerous, as it's no more supported, but still the one being cloned automatically if no branch is explicitly selected.

You can switch that in the repo settings at GitLab.

Furhtermore if possible, the old "master" branch should be deleted.

@anoopjohn: Only maintainers who can administer maintainers, can change the GitLab settings currently.

So could you please change the default branch to 2,x here:
