Seeking new maintainer(s) for Features module in Drupal 9+

Created on 11 May 2023, almost 2 years ago
Updated 1 June 2023, almost 2 years ago

The most active maintainer of Features β†’ in Drupal 9+ - nedjo - is moving on from Drupal. While he is not the project owner, he is the only one who has made commits to post-Drupal-7 branches since 2017.

At the very least, there's a need for new maintainers for Drupal 9+. Very likely, Features needs a new project owner.

There is a designated maintainer for the Drupal 7-compatible 7.x-2.x branch who made commits as recently as 30 Dec, 2021.

While Features is not as much used as it once was, it retains a reported install base in Drupal 8+ of higher than 30,000. As well, though a fair bit of work would be required first, there is a potential for Features to have new relevance should work from the current Distributions and Recipes Initiative β†’ be merged into Drupal core; see ✨ Support generating recipes Active .

    @nedjo, sad to see you go, thanks for all the great work over the years!

    Our team would be interested in helping maintain this module at least maintenance-wise, we are interested in getting a stable 3.x release with the 5.x branch merged into it, there don't seem to be any major features or breaking changes aside from dropping Drupal 8 support, which is totally okay to do in a branch of a Drupal module at this point. I'm highly doubtful we want someone to actively maintain the 8.x-3.x branch just for Drupal 8 support.

    @Dave Reid: that's great! Shall I start by adding you as a maintainer, and then you can work from there, adding new co-maintainers as needed?

    And, yes, your proposed plan for maintaining the 3.x branch seems sound to me. When I get a chance I'll follow up with more background in #297177: Only tiny bit of image viewing β†’ .

    @nedjo Yes that sounds fine.

    @nedjo, I work with @dave-reid and would be happy to volunteer for co-maintainer.

    @Dave Reid, done, I've assigned you full maintainer permissions. Thanks so much to you and your team for stepping up!

    @matthand thanks! I'll let Dave assign you and other co-maintainers as needed.

    There may be a place for further co-maintainers, but the main need is now covered and we could consider closing out this issue. A potential remaining question is that of project ownership. If there's interest in considering a change in ownership for Features, that could be pursued either now or at some future date.

    nedjo, thanks for getting a new maintainer on-board and for your years of service to the Drupal community.

    I think this has been sorted out now.
