From some users feedback, if possible change the pattern select list into an autocomplete field.
The grouping in the select list is a good first improvement, but if having too many patterns, having an autocomplete would be nice.
On first thought, changing this list by an autocomplete may be perceived as a regression on some other websites and difficult technically.
Maybe the best solution in the middle would be to change the basic select list into a select2 or a chosen select which allows some filtering.
But this would introduce a dependency so it should be optional.

It will be done in UI Patterns 2.x.

We agree we will not introduce dependencies to contrib. So, it is not doable until Drupal Core introduce a new fom element.
