Cronjob runs more times than expected

I had this same issue and it ended up being a bug with my drush version (default account timezone). It was fixed after upgrading to 11.2+.

I don't know if it's the same problem or a different one, but I'm seeing the "cron run completed" message far more frequently than I would expect.

FWIW we're using automated_cron and automated_cron.settings interval is set to 300, i.e. five minutes.

I'm closing the issue. It was solved by a drush update for me and at least 1 other person.
No point in keeping it open.
