When using dynamic_entity_reference 3.2.1 contrib module I'm also getting this error. Changes from MR resolved upcoming errors, but I think support of dynamic_entity_reference module should be double checked.
This may be an issue with our custom module's autocomplete integration with this module but posting the patch here in case anyone else has the issue.
Configure your field without a target type. To be honest I am not sure how we did this but posting the workaround.
Check for if the target type is set before trying to access it.
Verify the change doesn't break anything
