Thank you for the clarification - quick question - is there an order of operations issue to look out for? If we have already upgraded the Metatag module but have not removed Metatag Routes module yet, are there any concerns or gotchas when we remove the Metatag Routes module? Now, that I saying it out loud, we haven't had any with both operating, but it's worth asking and for visibility for anyone else. Thanks!

You can safely remove this module from your composer file.
FWIW I've offered to comaintain the module so that it can be shut down properly: 💬 Offer to comaintain Metatag Routes (to retire it) Fixed

This has been taken care of - the project now says "(obsolete)" in its name, its status has been update, the 8.x-1.x branch is no longer listed as supported, and some info has been added to the top of the description.
