The Drupal Contribution platform was created primarily for the Mentoring group to organize and plan a variety of online and in-person contribution events (including DrupalCons). While still using for this purpose (including DrupalCon Pittsburgh 2023), most groups running contribution events are good with centralizing on https://www.drupal.org/community/events → , using external platforms and don't feel the need to use or direct new contributors to an additional Drupal platform.
When Drupal Contribution (nonprofit org) → launched as an entity to sustain community and contribution groups, it made sense to make better use of the site by offering to maintain, host, develop new features, and widen the scope to support and sustain the entire community.

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
This has been on the back burner (once again) but we're in the process of evaluating if/how the platform (and it's dependancies) could be a proof of concept and prototype for the Innovation Hub on drupal.org (see #3421224: Unify and solidify Innovation Hub plan → ).
We'll update this issue as we go through the process.
