Long version:
As discussed with maintainer @truls1502 via PM, it might make sense to merge fontawesome_iconpicker into fontawesome module with a 3.x release and discontinue fontawesome_iconpicker.
I recently saw that "fontawesome" now also has an icon picker submodule, but I did not test it yet. So fontawesome_iconpicker MIGHT be obsolete, but there would have to be a detailed check.
I created a conversion from fontawesome_iconpicker to micon in https://www.drupal.org/project/fontawesome_iconpicker_to_micon → to do that conversion automatically. The same switch would also have to be made for "fontawesome_iconpicker" to "fontawesome".
The hard part is that only fontawesome_iconpicker uses "string" fields, while both other modules use own field types and you can't simply switch the field type once it's created. That's also solved in my helper module.
https://www.drupal.org/project/fontawesome_iconpicker → still has ~800 active installations, so I guess it would still be very useful to have a solution / upgrade path to different module.
The development of fontawesome_iconpicker seems to be close to zero, as maintainers didn't even recognize the missing Drupal 9 compatibility and thereby removed release listing on the module page.
