The module overview page mentions there is no upgrade path from drupal 7, but there should be an upgrade path from drupal 7 so that we can migrate fields without having to recreate them manually.
Provide a basic field migration plugin. This would not migrate PHP code, but would create the field config, field storage config, widget and formatter settings.
Once created, then this could be iterated on and improved.
