By introducing a BC-break in the middle of the 2.x branch, this module broke the semantic versioning rules.
While it is somewhat OK to only require Drupal 9, since Drupal 8 is now EOL, PHP 7.4 is still supported, and anyone using the ^2.0 restriction on this module should expect that they can use the same environment on version 2.1 as they did on version 2.0.
Please start a 3.0 branch for the PHP 8 only version of the module, as there's a clear BC break here, and issue a 2.1.1 version that restores PHP 7 support, even if that means that that version is a revert of the code that introduced the PHP 8-only requirement.
