Currently, when this module is enabled, you have to configure the Link (with attributes) widget for every individual link field.
Once this module is enabled, configure the widget as the default widget for newly created link fields.

@larowlan: 2Y later I think it would make sense to close this won't fix by maintainer decision. I'll do so and if you disagree, please reopen. Hope that's fine.
Who ever needs this as default, can use the patch, but I agree as a default it would be unexpected.
