For some reason I thought FG could do this; but guessing it doesn't.
For years i have used the Markup module to add custom text to a node form. But does this make sense? Why would i want to add a field to the node entity simply for displaying some help text on the form. This seems a lot like what FG does; except for the obvious point that it isn't grouping anything.
Perhaps FG does this and I haven't found it?
Is it something that FG could be expanded to do?
Is there another module which people use for this (besides Markup; which is the wrong way to do this).

Like you say. Field group is about grouping fields. It's not ment to add only markup. #4 seems to be a solution for you.
Agreed with #5, and I want to reiterate the solution at #4 is solid.
