Nodes vs Content Entities

Hi maintainers,

Thank you very much for this module.

When trying to create a Content Type with the provided field type, it became apparent that the setup seems reserved for use via the Content Entity shipped with the module, yet the Shorthand Entities are rendered as if they are content (nodes). Whilst this works, we were wondering if this was a conscious choice or are there other reasons why it was done this way?

Would there be room to introduce similar functionality via Node Types in the module?
