Nudge Templates

This is the current home of currently used nudges. Please copy/paste the appropriate nudge and format below for use. Copy the HTML format and paste it into a comment to display the formatted example on drupal.org. Use the text format in chats. Be wary of using nudges too often, as overuse could devalue their effectiveness.

Gatekeeping knowledge

When to use this nudge:

  • Use this when a community member uses phrases that demean another community member's contributions, ideas, or questions. For example, "I can't believe you don't know how to do this" or "this is so easy".
  • Use this when a community member specifically mentions another user's inexperience in relation to the contribution.
  • Use this when a community member makes assumptions about the motivation(s) of another community member's contributions, ideas, or questions.
  • When a community feigns surprise that another community member doesn't know something.

Formatted

This discussion appears to discourage contribution from some participants by assuming a level of education or exposure to information. This can discourage folks that are new to a conversation from asking for help or getting involved. Consider providing the new contributor with links to help them learn the topic or concept.

Principle #9 → can also be useful here: be constructively honest, and relentlessly optimistic. You can be optimistic and supportive by giving suggestions for how to improve their contributions. By being helpful, you encourage people to accept feedback and act on it.

Inclusive language - ableist terms

When to use this nudge:

  • Use this when terms like "lame", "blind", "insane", "crazy", or "retarded" are used to describe ideas or content.
  • Use this when non-people-first language is used, for example, "a handicapped person" versus "a person with a disability".

Inclusive language - gendered terms

When to use this nudge:

  • When someone uses a gender-specific word in a non-gender-specific context that has a negative effect on a conversation (usually, in an exclusionary manner). For example, "I need to hear from you guys on what we should do"
  • Be wary of using this nudge in situations where the commenter isn't being intentionally exclusionary. For example, “Hey, guys, how about we do this?” or, “This committee needs a chairman.”
  • When someone makes an assumption about the gender of another person. For example, referring to someone requesting help as she or to someone offering expertise as he.
  • Use this nudge when a person is intentionally exclusionary or someone expresses that they feel excluded.

  • When language is used that references/promotes a stereotype that is ethnically, racially, or religiously specific.
  • When a conversation includes language that is culturally-specific (local jargon and/or cultural references that don't translate well) that those not familiar with the culture wouldn't know.
